The Laws of Early Iceland

The law of the Icelandic Commonwealth, as from the Konungsbók manuscript. The text is Vilhjálmur Finsen’s edition of 1852, which prints the manuscript in the scribe’s own spelling. It was transcribed from scans of the printed page using AI. Chapter numbers follow Finsen’s edition. Four sections are currently available: Þingskapaþáttr, on assemblies; Vígslóði, on killing and wounding; Baugatal, on compensation for a killing; and Festaþáttr, on betrothal and marriage. More to come.
